Hi, I’m Lovi Fields and I’m the Community Engagement Coordinator for Collaborative
Diversion. I believe an individual’s success and the success of a community are
connected and depend on each other.

With a bachelors and master’s degree in
Criminal Justice I have a passion for helping people who have been impacted by the
criminal legal system and also preventing others from entering the system when
adequate resources and rehabilitation are possible.

Hello, my name is Chris Thomas the Case Manager Supervisor here at Collaborative
Diversion. I’ve been working in the mental health and substance use disorder field
for 9 years while also pursuing my Bachelor’s degree in Counseling with a focus on addiction, substance use, and chemical dependence.

I’ve had family members with addiction issues and putting people behind bars does not reduce re-offending, and sometimes it just makes it worse. This is why I’m 100% invested in the collaborative diversion initiative because we get people the help they actually need.

My name is Michael Gumz. I was a Police Officer in Aurora for 18 years, trained as a
drug counselor after going through drug court myself.

I am here because “God put me on this earth to help people, it’s all I know how to do.”

I was born in Aurora to immigrant parents and am a husband and father of 2 young
boys. I have had numerous roles in the community that I deeply care about. I am a
community advocate, mentor, leader and servant to all people. I believe we all have
the capacity to overcome adversity and thrive in whatever environment we are in.

One of my favorite quotes is:

“Direction is more important than speed” - Richard L. Evans

Why I do this?

I believe that we all tell stories in our lives. We walk around judging others by the
stories that their lives are telling. The parts of the stories that we are seeing.
Forgetting that we are only seeing one part of their story. Everyone deserves to
have their whole story be heard with dignity and empathy.

Everyone deserves a chance to tell a better story and to have the systems and barriers torn down that have kept them from living that story to the fullest. If I can be an advocate in that process it is an honor.

Success is no accident.

It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of
what you are doing or learning to do.

I am here because of my passion for helping people and trying to make a difference
in the best way possible. I am following the footsteps of mi familia to always try to
help those in need. I believe we should treat each other as equals. I believe we can
all make a difference if we try and working together can make a world of difference.
