FAQ

How long will the case take?
Criminal cases can take months or even years to resolve. This website has been created to provide timely, accurate updates to victims and the community as the case progresses.

What if I am a victim?
Investigators are actively working to identify all potential victims. If you are identified as a victim, law enforcement will contact you directly.

Should I hire a civil attorney?
The State's Attorney's Office cannot provide advice about private civil matters. Whether to hire a civil attorney is a personal decision.

Who has access to the videos?
Access to the videos and all digital evidence is restricted to law enforcement officers and prosecutors involved in the investigation. No private material will be released publicly or viewed by anyone who is not required to review it.

Will my information be released to the public?
No. Identifying victim information and all evidence collected in this investigation will remain confidential and will not be released to the public.

Should I come to court?
You are not required to attend routine court hearings. The courthouse is open to the public, but victims generally only need to participate if they choose to provide a victim statement at the sentencing hearing, which will occur at the end of the court process. Most court hearings before then will be status updates that victims do not need to attend.

How often will updates be provided on this website?
Updates will be posted periodically to keep the community informed. Because court cases move slowly, updates may only occur every few months unless a significant development happens. Our Victim Services Unit will notify identified victims of any hearings or information that directly affects them.

How do I give a victim impact statement at sentencing?
Victim statements are provided after a defendant is convicted and before sentencing. If you are identified as a victim, our office will contact you with instructions on how to submit a written statement or speak in court, if you choose.

Is David Hanson still in jail?
Yes. He is currently detained at the Kendall County Jail and will remain in custody while his case is pending.

I contacted the tip line and provided photos of myself, but have not heard back. Does that mean no compromising recordings of me were found?
Not necessarily, but you will get an update as soon as investigators are able to confirm all of the victims. The investigative process takes time, and investigators will contact individuals as soon as their status is confirmed.

How do I contact the investigations team?
For the most up-to-date information, please refer to this website. Investigators are working diligently on this case, until told otherwise please assume that the status of the investigation is ongoing. Email is the preferred method of contact, as it is monitored by the entire investigations team. It may take some time for investigators to get back to you. SAOvictimHotline@KaneCountyIL.gov.

Presumption of Innocence: It is important to keep in mind that a criminal indictment is merely an allegation, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty and that presumption requires both the court and our office to take certain steps to ensure that justice is served.
